To try and nswer this question I searched multiple databases in order to find research. The databases I found the most research on were ERIC. I know this database is appropriate for the topic because they are websites that provide links to articles that have to do with Human Development and Family Science. ERIC allows you to narrow the results down to show only peer-reviewed articles and so I did that to make sure that they are reliable and appropriate sources. The first article was published in Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, which is a very reliable Journal. It has been around for many years and it is very consistent. The second article is published in SRATE Journal, which I found to be of great quality. I know this because, like the first article, it has many sources and that shows that the research had been done in depth and found reliable information to be presented in the article. In the first article there are four authors, all affiliated to Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The authors are: Jonathan P. Rossing, Willie M. Miller, Amanda K. Cecil, and Suzan E. Stamper. I think the authors are very credible because they have done their research and each of them either work at the University or is a professor. The second article has two authors: Vivian H. Wright, Professor at University of Alabama and Elizabeth K. Wilson, also a Professor at University of Alabama. I think they are both very credible, same as with the first source, because they are reliable professors and have information from a lot of that are cited are mostly all Journals. Examples of resources they used that I may want to look at for my paper are, Wivian Wright, Elizabeth Wilson, 2011. Technology integration is generally promoted as a method to enhance teaching and learning. And Jonathan P. Rossing, William M. Miller, Amanda K. Cecil, Suzan E. Stamper. 2012. The future of higher education? Student perceptions on learning with mobile tablets. Some terminology that is used is mobile tablets, meaning iPads or computers over textbooks and technology integration, also meaning computers over textbooks. The topic I am going to be writing my paper on is technology and how it affects a childs learni ng outcome. I have heard multiple opinions about how technology affects a childs learning outcome, both positive and negative sides. I am going to be doing research to see if technology truly is a positive or a negative contribution to a lassroom. My goal is to find out the affects of learning through technology is more beneficial than using textbooks or if technology is a negative contribution to childrens learning. The first article, iLearning: The future of higher education? Student perceptions on learning with mobile tablets, is talking about the use of mobile technology on college campuses and how technology will be the future of the classroom, including learning activities, research, and even communication between the teachers and students. However, is it a good thing or a bad thing? The authors discover that ntegrating technology into the classroom can contribute to useful academic outcomes, such as: digital video, podcasts, tablet computers. They also found that technology could support social construction of learning, assessment, motivation, and the students engagement in learning. On the other hand, they found a major problem with integrating technology into the classroom is income. They also discovered that the digital technology assistance in solving in teaching or learning practices are not clearly defined, and does not give you the clear help and guidance a teacher offers. This article provides both viewpoints of why technology can be a ositive attribute or a negative one. They first showed the positive contribution technology brings to a classroom and stated those contributions. They found that learning through technology allows students to expand discussion and investigation beyond the classroom. It enables them to collaborate and create knowledge and to interact with a larger range of content. The study consisted, in total, 209 II-JPLJI students participated in the study; students participation had no bearing on their status in the course and did not affect their grade in any way. For the negative aspect of technology in a classroom, income omes to mind (Cecil 2012). The relate is a survey that is meant to collect data in four open-ended questions consis ting of: how the iPads helped or limited learning, two things you liked about using it, two things you disliked about using it, and any suggestions for other ways to use the iPads. The results of this study led to finding both negative and positive aspects that technology brings to the classroom. They found educators using iPads or other mobile technology in the classroom must be committed to learning how to use devices effectively in classroom instruction and to working through the learning curve akes time to get use to and can be beneficial for students and teachers; for example, it can cause a bigger scale of communication for the entire class. However, the authors do mention a few limitations to this study. Those limitations are: only researching the outcomes of using an iPad, iPads have only been in the market for a few years, and the study is limited to student perceptions of learning and engagement. The interdisciplinary nature of this study made assessing student learning outcomes difficult due to the varied expectations and learning outcome easures from the arts and humanities to the hard sciences. Therefore, future research should include discipline specific studies that measure how mobile technology affects specific learning outcomes (Rossing 2012). With that being said, this study was limited to a specific population of people and when it is conducted next time it should use random sampling method. If the study were to use people whos first language is English, it may have ended with different results. Therefore, the researchers should have tested a variety of technologies, not Just Pads, and a larger scale of people. The second article, Teachers Use of Technology: Lessons Learn ed from the Teacher Education Program to the Classroom, is talking about how technology affects a teachers role in the classroom. They based their research on ten teachers perceptions of technology integration and technology use in their classrooms, five years after their graduation from a teacher education program which encouraged technology use in teaching and learning (Wright 2011). For this research, the authors interviewed and observed eight male and two female teachers who were currently teaching five years in a middle or high school classroom. The environment these teachers had to create were purely based on learning from technology. These teachers were exposed to multiple technologies such as: online discussions, interactive whiteboards, and online portfolios. These teachers received additional training in emerging technologies. The technology faculty member was also active in helping to develop the states technology standards and had initiated a Master Technology Teacher partnership with local middle and high school teachers. Qualitative data sources consisted of surveys and reflections, completed by the articipants during their teaching methods class and their internship. The interviews occurred during each teachers class preparation time or before/after school hours (Wright Wilson 2012). Moreover, the researchers spent countless hours interviewing and examining surveys to find out how much of an impact technology has on a teacher and learning. The results of this study gained positive feedback on the impact technology has on the teachers and learning outcome. They researchers found that the participants were given multiple technology applications and skills in developing their electronic ortfolio. The teachers continued to become familiar with ways to utilize basic technology skills and how to incorporate it into their teacher education program. Surprisingly, the authors did not have limitations during their study. This study was a true to form experiment. It allowed a good set of participants that were not too broad or too narrow. Given the fact that they received additional help could have altered the result, imagine if those teachers were not given extra help on improving their results. In conclusion, I found both these articles to be helpful in finding out how echnology can affect a teacher and a students learning outcome. They give clear evidence to support their arguments and to me it was not surprising to read the end results. I would have assumed there were positive and negative attributes in bringing technology into a classroom. However, I know this topic can last for an eternity because technology is always changing and progressing so we may never truly know how it can impact a teacher or a students learning outcome, we simply continue to do research for the present time and only hope to improve what needs the improvement.

It is proved by the data from The Ministry of Health of Indonesia which shows that the increase of smoker prevalence from 27% in 1995 to 36.3% in 2013. She added that the number of smokers in Indonesia currently reaches 90 million people. B ased on the data , we can conclude that Indonesia is emergency on cigarettes. I t is in line with the fact with the environment around us when we find people smoking everywhere in any places which already become a very common thing. I ronically even in public transport that should be free from cigarette smoke , the non-smokers instead become a minority. The fact above is actually make me frustrate because first, t he high number of smokers is certainly affected the health of individuals and the environment. As is known, a lot of diseases can caused by smoking such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, and chronic lung disease. Second the other bad impact is not just on the health but social and economic impacts will also be affected by tobacco consumption and exposure to secondhand smoke. The third is t he city where I lived, Pandeglang regency which known as a beautiful part of Banten province region dominated by mountains and definitely has cool air , now filled with cigarette smoke. Don't you wonder why I said that? It is because I really know what it's like to be a minority among smokers in my own place, for the example when I' m using a public transport I almost can't escape from the cigarette smoke it means that in my city the public transportat ion does not apply the smoking rules, when in fact the government has set the rules related to this case. It regulated on the government regulation of the republic of Indonesia no. 19 year 2003 on the safeguards of cigarettes for health stated in article 22 " Public places, health facilities, workplaces and places that are specifically places for teaching and learning, arena of children's activities, places of worship and public transport are declared non-smoking areas. " Actually the increase of cigarette smoke can be overcome by several ways such as double the price of cigarette and the taxes raised can be used to fund the government programs. So what about the role of us as the society? the smallest thing is that we can tell the dangers of smoking to our nearest person. The other way is we can advocate for governments on the enforcement of cigarette regulations and organize anti-smoking campaigns in our own place.

Creative Capitalism Essay In an essay for TIME Magazine entitled â€Å"Making Capitalism More Creative,† multi-billionaire computer tycoon turned philanthropist Bill Gates (2008) espouses the potential for capitalism to flex and adapt in ways that can help address the needs of the poor or those in the developing Third World by creatively responding to them as markets with their own unique set of challenges, and as opportunities to build corporate brand recognition and prestige. In effect, Gates charges that by reconciling the self-interest of the profit imperative with that of the humanitarian drive, the world can make ‘lasting progress on the big inequities that remain. ’ Gates slyly implies that while governments, non-profit entities and other civic groups have gone to great lengths in these areas, such progress can sufficiently be hastened through the â€Å"[channeling] of market forces† and â€Å"innovation that’s tailored to the needs of the poorest.† One point of note in Gates’ piece is the benefits which accrue to corporations which can find business opportunities in the avenues of philanthropic interest. Gates opines that philanthropic recognition – such as industry report cards – go a long way to building a better brand that could potentially command the kind of consumer loyalty which makes such acts ultimately profitable. Also, Gates reminds readers that one of the reasons why the capitalist enterprise has so frequently overlooked the markets of the poor and the developing Third World is the extent to which their purchasing power is so limited as to remove them from its priorities. However, Gates notes that such a limitation applies only to individual purchasing power yet â€Å"one study found that the poorest two-thirds of the worlds population has some $5 trillion in purchasing power† and that oversight is largely a result of a failure to study their needs. Furthermore, Gates notes that because young people want to feel better about the institutions which employ them – â€Å"[they] want to feel like their company really is a be positive agent for change† – and as such, it becomes ultimately beneficial to engage in these positive acts because it is made up for with employee dedication and commitment. It becomes easier to recruit and retain them when they feel substantially invested in the company’s goals, especially if they mean more than meeting quarterly fiscal targets. It is on this note that it would be wise to consider what the implications are for companies that engage in such philanthrocapitalism with regards to performance appraisals. Not all employees are created equally and dedication to company goals does not necessarily obviate the need to review their performance and the means by which the company is able to successfully motivate them to the best of their ability. The primary consideration however, is the allocation of organizational rewards. Business consultant W. Edwards Deming (2000) defines a company’s obligations to be to all parties involved; not just to its shareholders, but to its employees, customers and the community it operates in. Therefore, any company which attempts to engage in the creative use of capitalism to address under prioritized markets (i.e., the poor and Third World) must also adopt a similar tact towards its employees. This means that organizational rewards should go beyond the conventional use of salary upgrades and promotions, but recognizing that employees will want to become more involved in the goals of the company which they respect – and that hierarchical superiority, compensation benefits or increased responsibilities are a moot point to such desires. Twyla Tharp Twyla Tharp, an American dancer and choreographer, was born on July 1, 1941 in Portland, Oregon. When Twyla was a child her and her parents moved to Southern California and the family opened a drive-in movie theater the Twyla worked at from the age of eight. Twyla began taking piano lessons at the age of two and dance lessons at the age of four. Twyla’s mother wanted her daughter to be accomplished in many fields so she enrolled her daughter in various arts and other classes such as French, German, and shorthand. Soon after beginning her dance lessons Twyla developed a deep interest in all the types of dance available to her. Twyla attended Pacific High School in San Bernardino, California and studied at the Vera Lynn school of Dance. After High school Twyla left home to attend Pomona College and later transferred to Bernard College in New York City where she studied art history. Bullying is not defined as a form of abuse in Working Together but there is clear evidence that it is abusive and will include at least one, if not two, three or all four, of the defined categories of abuse. Recognising child abuse is not easy. It is not our responsibility to decide whether or not child abuse has taken place or if a child is at significant risk of harm from someone. We do however, have both a responsibility and duty, as set out in your organisation’s child protection procedures, to act in order that the appropriate agencies can investigate and take any necessary action to protect a child. Physical abuse Physical abuse is deliberately causing physical harm to a child. This might involve punching; kicking, biting, burning, scalding, shaking, throwing or beating with objects such as belts, whips, or sticks. It also includes poisoning, giving a child alcohol or illegal drugs, drowning or suffocation. Physical harm may also be caused when a parent or carer fabricates the symptoms of illness in a child. Signs of Physical Abuse There are certain signs that need to be acknowledged when suspicion arises that physical abuse is occurring: Any injuries not consistent with the explanation given to staff. Injuries which occur to any part of the body but usually in places which are not normally exposed to falls or rough games Injuries which have not received medical attention Reluctance to change in the heat, or to change/participate in activities such as, PE or swimming Bruises (usually in clusters), human bites, cigarette burns and fractures, for example, which do not have an accidental explanation multiple burns with a clearly demarcated edge Fear of parents being approached for an explanation Flinching when approached or touched Aggressive behaviour and/or sudden anger outbursts Depression Running away from home Possible effects of physical abuse Physical abuse can lead directly to neurological damage, physical injuries, disability and in extreme cases death. Physical abuse has been linked to aggressive behavior in children, emotional and behavioral problems and learning difficulties. Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse is where repeated verbal threats, criticism, shouting, lack of love and affection causes a severe adverse effect on a child’s emotional development. It consists of communicating to children that they are worthless, unloved, and inadequate or valued. Emotional abuse may include not giving a child opportunities to express their views, deliberately silencing them or ‘making fun’ of what they say. It may feature inappropriate expectations being imposed on a child, over protection and limitation of exploration and learning, or preventing the child from taking part in normal social interaction. Signs of possible emotional abuse †¢ Depression, aggression, extreme anxiety, changes or regression in mood or behavior, particularly where a child withdraws or becomes clingy †¢ Obsessions or phobias †¢ Sudden underachievement or lack of concentration †¢ Seeking adult attention and not mixing well with other children †¢ Sleep or speech disorders †¢ Low self-esteem †¢ Fear of parents/carer being approached regarding their behavior †¢ Fear of making mistakes Possible effects of emotional abuse This type of abuse can lead to adverse long-term effects on the child’s development. Emotional abuse has a significant impact on a developing child’s mental health, behavior and self-esteem. This type of abuse is as important as the other three types, and can be detected as the signs are more visible and can be easily detected. Domestic violence, adult mental health problems and parental substance misuse may be features in families where children are exposed to such abuse. Sexual Abuse Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child or young person to take part in sexual activities, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening. This may involve physical contact including penetrative sex, oral sex, masturbation, kissing, rubbing, or touching outside of clothing, or it may involve non-contact activities such as involving children in watching sexual activities, producing or looking at sexual images, encouraging children to behave in sexually inappropriate ways, or grooming a child in preparation for abuse (including via the internet). Abusers can be men, women or other children. Between 21% and 36% of sexually abused children will display few or no symptoms but it is usually a child’s behavior which becomes a cause for concern. Children who tell of sexual abuse do so because they want it to stop therefore is extremely important to listen to a child that discloses such an allegation. Signs of possible sexual abuse †¢ Any allegations made by a child concerning sexual abuse †¢ self-harming, sometimes leading to suicide attempts †¢ Sexual activity through words, play or drawing †¢ Repeated urinary infections, itching or bleeding around genital area and/or unexplained stomach pains †¢ The child is sexually provocative or seductive with adults †¢ Saying they have a secrets that they cannot share with anyone †¢ Severe sleep disturbances with fears, phobias, vivid dreams or nightmares which sometimes have overt or veiled sexual connotations or bedwetting †¢ Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia Possible effects of sexual abuse Behavior such as self-harm, inappropriate sexual behavior, sadness, depression and loss of self-esteem has all been linked to sexual abuse. The effects of sexual abuse can affect the individual into their adult life. The extent or the severity of each case is determined by the time span of abuse, the more serious the abuse, the younger the child is and the relationship of the child to the abuser. Once sexual abuse has been identified the support of an adult who believes the child helps, starts to help the child understand the abuse and can therefore offer help and protection to the abused child. Neglect Neglect has been described as the â€Å"most serious type of child maltreatment and the least understood† (Crittenden 1999: 67). It is the most common reason for a child to be placed on the child protection register in the UK. Neglect is the failure to meet a child’s basic physical and or psychological needs, which is likely to affect the child’s health or development. Neglect is when a parent or carer fails to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter (including exclusion from home or abandonment), medical care, or protection from physical and emotional harm or danger. Additionally failure to ensure access to education or to look after a child because the carer is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is considered as Neglect. Signs of possible neglect †¢ Dirty skin, body smells, unwashed, uncombed hair and untreated lice †¢ Clothing that is dirty, too big or small, or inappropriate for weather conditions †¢ frequently left unsupervised or alone †¢ Frequent diarrhoea †¢ complaints of being tired all the time †¢ Untreated illnesses, infected cuts or physical complaints which the carer doesn’t respond to †¢ frequently hungry sometimes stealing other children’s food †¢ Being underweight Possible effects of neglect Neglect can seriously impair a child’s health, physical and intellectual growth and development, and can cause long term difficulties with social functioning, relationships and educational progress. Extreme cases of neglect can cause death. Bullying Bullying is also recognized as a type of abuse. Bullying is always distressing for the victim and can have serious consequences. Bullying should always be taken seriously. Emotional bullying is the most commonly reported by children and young people and is often more difficult to spot. Bullying can take place both inside and outside of the school. Bullying happens when an individual or a group show hostility towards an individual and this can be: †¢ Emotional, such as name-calling, not talking to someone, taking or hiding personal items, humiliating, spreading rumors or teasing †¢ Physical, such as pushing, kicking, hitting, pinching or threatening to use physical force †¢ Racist, such as racial taunts or gestures †¢ Sexual, such as inappropriate physical contact, sexual comments and innuendo, or homophobic taunts. Signs of possible bullying Loss of personal possessions, dinner money or items of clothing Torn clothing, maybe even having cuts and bruises (if physically bullied) Shyness, withdrawn behavior, lack of self-esteem and depression Aggressive, bad tempered behavior and may become aggressive to younger siblings Threaten or attempt suicide Not achieving very well academically Not wanting to leave their home Possible effects of bullying Bullying will most definitely affect a child’s social and emotional development as they have very low self-esteem maybe depression and will probably try to isolate themselves from others which will have a profound effect on their social skills with their peers and pretty much everybody around them, they may become aggressive and bad tempered and may threaten or attempt suicide and in some extreme cases may actually commit suicide. Cyber-bullying In recent years, a new form of bullying known as ‘cyber-bullying’ has become increasingly common. Cyber-bullying may be emotional, racist or sexual forms of abuse. It happens through emails, text messages or telephone calls. Information about someone may also be shared by putting it on to social networking sites. This can include the sharing of private photographs. Children and young people who use this method of bullying often feel disassociated from their actions, but the consequences can be just as serious for the child. This type of bullying can be particularly distressing as children are unable to get away from it, it even invades their home.

The perpetrators are men whose authority children are told to obey. Often the child is also threatened to keep what is happening a secret between the victim and the perpetrator and victim. Louis L'amour essays Louis LAmour was born on March 22, 1908, in Jamestown, North Dakota. His father, Louis Charles, was a veterinarian and farm machinery salesman and was also involved in local politics. Charles served as alderman of Jamestowns largest ward for many years as well as deputy sheriff, but he lost his mayoral race. LAmour married Katherine Elizabeth Adams, on February 19, 1956. They had two children: Beau Dearborn and Angelique Gabrielle (Contemporary Authors, 25). Young Louie enjoyed playing cowboys and Indians, and roughhoused in the family barn. He did more than his share of reading, particularly G.A. Henty, an Englishman who wrote of wars through the nineteenth century. His work ethic was instilled by his parents. The LAmour family library encompassed some five hundred books, among them the works of Whittier, Lowell, Longfellow, and Poe, as well as popular American and English writers. The youngest of the LAmour children, Louie remembered reading a five-volume Colliers History of the World while he was small enough to sit in his fathers lap. His serious reading began at twelve with a collection of biographies titled The Genius of Solitude.
